In all fairness to Breville this is what they wrote me about the non-stick scratching issue people are experiencing: The coating used in our EW30XL is a very high quality coating called Quantanium, made by Whitford. We recommend using wooden utensils and avoiding the use of excessive oil. This product has less than a 1% defective rate currently. I pondered buying the Breville EW30XL but ended up buying the Presto 5900 Stainless Steel Wok. I figured no matter how careful I'd be with the EW30XL it'd eventually become scratched due to my negligence just like the rest of my other non-scratch surface type kitchen pans. This wok is very nice looking. It heats quickly with much of the outside area remaining cool to the touch. Clean-up is a breeze. The electrical cord is short but I use an extention cord to get it away from my cupboards. I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend it to others. I understand that it must be short for safety reasons, but a just few more inches would be nice for placing the wok a bit farther from the wall. I used it for a weekend trip to the country with some friends; I needed to make a lot of pancakes all at once. This griddle reminds me of the times when my mother used to make pancakes but now I'm a step above. This thing has a very low profile yet a large surface area. I was able to grill five (5) large pancakes all at once with the bottom two slightly offset from the top three. I didn't use any butter or oil at all, the non-stick surface looks a bit strange but it worked amazingly well and helped add a slight health factor to something so unhealthy. We also cooked scrambled eggs and bacon on this thing and it was great too. The scrambled eggs were slightly challenging on the non-stick surface and I would suggest letting them sit on the griddle surface slightly longer than a pan; this will help lifting them off when mixing the scrambled eggs. I use it on average 2 to 5 times a day. The whistle isn't quite as loud as it was in it's younger days, hence I've boiled it dry quite a few times, with no ill effects. The only drawbacks are the one quart capacity and dragging the cord around when I fill it. So, if you want an electric kettle for under $20, this is a good buy. One at home, and one to make a quick tea/coffee at work. They make a quick job of boiling water, have a very loud whistle and just excellent overal. One thing to notice though - it will only hold three to four cups of water. Perfect for a small family, but not enough if you have more than 2 tea drinkers at home. I have not seen rust on either pot I own, so it's possible that the other reviewer had a bad unit.
